If you’ve ever told someone you were entering a long distance relationship, you’ve probably heard all about the negative. "It’ll never work!", "He’ll find some one else!", "You’ll find someone else!" BLAH BLAH BLAH!
Well, the truth is, some long-distance relationships really do work, some do not. But if both people WANT it to work, and decide to MAKE it work, it WILL work. So don’t listen to the doubters. They aren’t in the relationship, it’s not them you love, so ignore them. We’re not going to preach about why long-distance relationships are so great, because obviously it would be better to be with the one you love. BUT there are ways to communicate — this isn’t 500 BC you know! It all comes down to how much you love each other. If you really love each other more than anything else in the world, you will want to make this work. Just knowing that you are with the girl you will eventually spend your life with should make it worth while.
Communicate
Like I said above, this isn’t 500 BC. It’s the twenty-first century.
There are many ways to keep in touch:
1. Snail Mail (letters). This method isn’t the fastest way to get news from one place to another, BUT letters are handwritten have more of a personal touch. They are real, you can keep it in your room or somewhere special to read whenever you get down.
2. E-mail: A very quick way to send a message. Sends in a minute, everybody has e-mail, everybody loves to GET e-mail. It definately brightens up the inbox from all the junk mail you get! You can add attachments (like pictures!) And you could also send e-cards for a little twist to show her how much you care.
3. Phone: read this next bit very carefully : MAKE SURE THE CALLER GETS OR ALREADY HAS A LONG DISTANCE PLAN. This is very important, so you don’t end up like the guy who had a phone bill over $200.
4. Instant messages/chat rooms: MSN, Yahoo, IRC, ICQ… It doesn’t matter which you prefer, the point is, Instant Messages are a great way to chat. You can have whole conversations over the net. And with all the gimmicks out now, you can even have video-chats!
Word Of Warning: When you can’t be face to face with a person, you miss out on facial expressions and body language. Things you say and the things she says can be easily mis-interpreted. Always try to explain if a conflict arises. Ask her what she thought you meant by it, if she’s wrong, explain what you meant. Do the same thing when you get angry at her. Ask her to explain more clearly.
Why You Should Stay In A Long Distant Relationship
1. You love him
2. She loves you
3. The first time you see her after being a part…TRUST me…it’s all worth it!
4. What doesn’t kill you will only make you stronger (ha ha…had to add it…but it’s true!)
5. She’s the reason you keep going. It’s just 2 more years/4 more months/5 more days, it makes what you are doing a bit easier. If you HAVE to be away, at least you have something to look forward too.
Whatever the case, don’t buy into the myth that long-distance relationships are impossible. If you both want it to work and do everything you can to make it work…IT WILL.
